Breeding heritage animals like Belted Galloway cattle and Wessex Saddleback pigs is vital for the long‑term survival of these unique genetic lines and the overall resilience of livestock species. Heritage breeds carry distinct genetic traits — such as hardiness, adaptability to extensive grazing systems, disease resistance, maternal ability, and distinctive meat quality — that are often lost in intensive commercial breeding focused narrowly on production speed or uniform traits. Conserving these traits maintains agrobiodiversity, helping agriculture cope with climate change, emerging diseases and future food system challenges.
In Australia, the Belted Galloway is recognised as a heritage beef breed with a registered herd book maintained by the Australian Belted Galloway Association, which has around 142 members and over 1,000 registered animals in its herd book. Estimates of the global Belted Galloway population suggest fewer than about 10,000 head worldwide, reflecting its status as a niche but important genetic resource.
The Wessex Saddleback pig is even rarer: recent data indicate only around 17 registered animals across about five herds in Australia, with the breed considered critically rare. Worldwide the numbers of pure Wessex Saddlebacks remain very low, making them a threatened pig breed globally. Because the breed is extinct in its original UK homeland and survives in only a few small populations elsewhere, Australian breeders play a disproportionately important role in preserving this unique genetic heritage.
Supporting and expanding breeding programs for these and other heritage breeds helps preserve genetic diversity crucial to sustainable, resilient farming systems now and into the future.

Belted Galloway cattle are a hardy heritage breed known for their adaptability, efficiency, and exceptional beef quality. Originating in the rugged conditions of Scotland, they thrive in a wide range of climates and thrive in a variety of farm systems. Their thick double coat allows them to stay warm without heavy fat cover, resulting in naturally well-marbled, tender beef that is prized for its flavour.
Belted Galloways are also efficient converters of grass into high-quality protein, making them ideal for low-input and regenerative farming systems. Their calm temperament, strong maternal instincts, and ability to utilise diverse forage further make them a sustainable and practical choice for farmers focused on animal welfare, environmental stewardship, and premium beef production.
At Heritage Farms, our cattle are predominantly grass-fed but enjoy a varied diet that includes forages that have been sustainably sourced from commercial food and beverage production. This combination of grass, grains, fruits and minerals produces beef that is tender, full of full of flavour and naturally marbled. In short, it is export quality beef that we reserve for Australian buyers.

Saddleback pigs are a traditional heritage breed valued for their hardiness, productivity, and excellent meat quality. Originally developed in the United Kingdom, they are well suited to outdoor and free-range farming systems thanks to their strong legs, good foraging ability, and tolerance of varying weather conditions. Saddlebacks are known for their calm temperament and outstanding maternal instincts, producing large litters and caring well for their piglets.
Saddleback pork is particularly prized for its rich flavour and good fat cover, which helps create succulent, high-quality meat and traditional bacon. These qualities make Saddleback pigs an ideal choice for farmers focused on sustainable, pasture-based production and premium pork products.
At Heritage Farms, we feed our pigs a diet rich in whey protein, and finish them on locally sourced walnuts - a tradition that has been followed by the Italians in producing their world-famous prosciuttos and Parma hams. This combination produces an exceptionally succulent meat and creamy, buttery fat that is never dry and doesn't have the unpleasant waxy mouthfeel of commercially raised pork.
Our Belted Galloway herd are registered through Galloways Australia and have exceptional bloodlines that can be traced all the way back to the original Morchrum Belted Galloway herd in Scotland. Throughout the year, we release a limited number of heifers and bull calves for breeding stock.

Our stud bull, Hercules has impressive bloodlines that trace all the way back to Scotland. He is a proven 5-year old bull that has sired 50+ calves.

Each year, we release a limited number of registered heifer and bull calves that are available on weaning. Please contact us as early as possible to reserve, especially bull calves. Mature cows and steers also available on request.
Our pig herd is a mixture of purebred Saddleback pigs, Saddleback x Berkshire pigs, and Saddleback x Large White pigs. As we transition to fully registered Saddlebacks, we will be selling off our non-registered herd. All of our pigs are free-range and trained to electric fencing. They are also calm and fairly easy to catch and handle.

We have registered Saddleback pigs available for sale as breeding stock. These will be weaned in April/May and will be ready to go to their new homes.

As we transition to a completely registered herd, we will be moving our commercial sows on to new pastures. All of these girls are proven mothers that have produced litters of 10 - 18 piglets. They are also easy to handle and used to being around people.

Throughout the year, we have a limited number of pig available for growing out. All of our pigs are free-range and have been fed a whey-protein diet that produces a very tasty pork meat. Slips start from $150 each. Porkers (40 - 80kg) start from $350 and baconers (80kg+) start from $600.
